Congressman Hall helps students honor war veterans in Union Grove

The oldest serving US congressman, who is also a World War II veteran, is helping East Texans kick off Veterans Day weekend.

East Texas Congressman Ralph Hall spoke at a ceremony today in Union Grove.

Men and women from three different generations, WWII through Desert Storm, were honored at Union Grove gym for their service.

"Personally, it hits the heart and it does be good to see that schools like this put on programs for veterans," said Vietnam veteran Don Kinsey.

The 90-year-old Hall was the keynote speaker at the event.

"These are the kinds of visits I like to make. These are the visits that are worthwhile," Hall says.

Hall says every vet's sacrifice is for the next generation.

"We owe each of these children opportunity. they owe us effort," says Hall.

90-year-old Floyd Faircloth served in three wars.

"It's extremely important, otherwise I wouldn't be a-coming here at 90 years old. Best program I have ever been to in honoring the veterans," he says.

Each branch was recognized and a roll call was taken.

For many it was what all veterans want: a simple thanks.

"Some of them didn't get to come home. I was one of the lucky ones that did," Kinsey says.

They gave their service when their country called, and Union Grove showed them it was appreciated.

"We all were in different branches of the service, and they all were good. We just decorate different graves," Hall says.

The veterans were treated to lunch after the ceremony and a meet and greet with Congressman Hall.
