Lufkin's first half-marathon in years to come to town this winter

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Some very lucky East Texans are getting the chance to participate in one of Lufkin's very first half-marathons in several years.

It's unclear how long it has been since Lufkin had its very own half-marathon, but board members at the Junior Achievement of Angelina County say it almost feels like Lufkin's first.

The organization has teamed up with Whataburger to present their race for success that will be on December 21. While it seems like a mile away, you can actually start signing up right now for the race.

"Junior achievement is excited to host a 5k, 10k, and half marathon. We're hosting it for Lufkin. This is the first time in a very long time to have a half marathon here in Lufkin. We are currently pulling in people…not just local runners…but people from the State of Texas. People from Louisiana, from Houston, and the Woodlands, Tyler and the Dallas-Fort Worth area," said Michelle Harlow-Green, the Executive Director for Junior Achievement of Angelina County.

"We started meeting with our committee in July and we have met roughly once a month ever since there. The closer we get to it the more often that we meet. We have done all the measurements to have the course certified by race day. We also have put a lot of work in having entertainment there. So we're going to have a band and we're going to have booths there the runners will enjoy we are looking for things to give to runners who participated so we've done a lot of work just trying to get it ready," said Melinda Sullivan, the Marketing Director for Whataburger.

If you are interested in signing up for the race, you can visit www.active.com or www.raceforsuccesslufkin.com. There will also be a 5k race at 8:20 a.m., a 10k race at 8:10 a.m., and the half-marathon at 8 a.m.

Tickets for the 5k are $35, the 10k for $45, and the half-marathon for $85. All proceeds will go to the Junior Achievement of Angelina County, which depends on fundraising to thrive. The race will be at Slack Elementary at 1305 Fuller Springs Dr., Lufkin, TX.

Ghost stories and haunted houses have long been a popular past time, but just how much truth is there to the legends? "As Shakespeare said there are more things in heaven and earth then are in your books,” says Big Foot Expert Jeff Hurley. “There are things we don't understand." At the April 21, Paranormal Conference, experts in the subject came together to further explore their theories.

"Often time people that get rabies from bats, don't realize they've come in contact with one.
