Junior Achievement and YPN of Angelina County starts new learning program for kids

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Second grade students at Dunbar Primary got to be a part of the very first JA in a Day Monday morning that was hosted by the Young Professional Network of Lufkin/Angelina County and the Junior Achievement of Angelina County (JA).

It was the first time the two organizations partnered to bring a new resource to PACE students. Michelle Green, the Executive Director for Junior Achievement, said she and Hilary Haglund Walker, a YPN chair, began planning the partnership during the summer.

"It's a fun, unique way of learning and we have all these students at once and they learn all about it in one day," Green said.

Several YPN members volunteered during Monday's event and helped present five consecutive sessions of JA's program Our Community.

The members taught the kids about interdependent roles of workers in the community, and how money flows in a economy.

"We are all from parts of the community so we are able to teach students about the community and work in our professions too so that was really a neat way for us to have some perspective from our own lives to bring into the classroom," Haglund Walker said.

The program was created to connect community volunteers with students to help to inspire them to make wise financial choices as they get older.
