George P. Bush speaks at Hispanic Business Achievers Awards in Tyler

Around 500 people attended the Sixth Annual Hispanic Business Achievers Awards luncheon in Tyler on Tuesday.

The event was held at Harvey Hall and featured guest speaker George P. Bush. Over 20 Hispanic-owned businesses were chosen as finalists in the running for seven awards given by the Hispanic Business Alliance.

  • Micro Business: Licea Insurance Group
  • Established Business: Expert Auto Electric
  • Woman-Owned: Cindy's Balloons and Party Supply
  • Restaurant: Los Gueros
  • General Contractor: Calvary Plumbing
  • Professional: Nidia Arellano Hassan, Director of Admissions- Tyler Junior College
  • Non-Profit Organization: St. Paul Children's Association of East Texas   
     

George P. Bush spoke about his Hispanic heritage and called for greater political participation by the Latino community.

Bush said his interest in public service comes from his grandmother, Barbara Bush. He quoted her saying, "If we served others before thinking of ourselves, typically things would work out for the best". Bush is a candidate for Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office in 2014.

Tuesday's award ceremony was sponsored by Brookshire's and Super 1 Foods.
