Tyler ISD looks to community to help improve district
An East Texas school district is reaching out to the community, asking for feedback to help the guide its future. The Tyler Independent School District will roll out an online survey Tuesday, which will be available to the entire community. It’s an effort Superintendent Gary Mooring called a key to the district’s success in an online update.
"We know it takes the community involvement for us to really make great strides here in Tyler," Mooring said in the online video.
The survey will ask participants what they believe the district does well and what areas need improvement.
Cedrick Granberry has three children in the district. He also participated in No More Excuses Tyler ISD, a group that advocated for changes in the schools during the recent bond election.
“I think that that is a direct result of the community putting the district under fire and saying hey, look, we need to address certain things.”
One of the concerns is a need for upgrades to high school facilities.
Over the last three years, the district has shed over 300 students from its overall enrollment. But high school enrollment continues to tick up, with even larger class sizes coming down the pipeline.
“A building is merely important for technology and a means for children being safe,” Granberry said. “That's definitely important no doubt. But How we administer, how we deal with policy, how we treat our teachers, this is so important. It's vital to our children getting ahead in this day and time.”
Granberry said it is a conversation he welcomes as a preliminary step in the right direction.
“It's going to be very important to read through and see what parents have to say,” he said, “But not only that, but to carry out, to implement, to make sure that we do everything we can to make sure our students have the most success in our education.”
The survey will be available through November 15. Those responses will then go to a strategic planning committee, which is expected to present its plan for the district in March.
