LARUE, TX (KLTV) -

An early morning accident near Athens claimed the lives of two East Texas women on Friday.

Department of Public Safety troopers say the wreck happened at the intersection of US 175 East and Farm to Market Road 2588 in LaRue around 7:45 a.m.

Troopers say that Carrie Smith, 31, of Athens, was traveling on FM 2588, driving a 1999 Nissan Maxima. But when she approached the intersection of US 175, she ran the stop sign.

Troopers say that a truck hit Smith's car, and that collision forced her car into a third vehicle. Smith died at the scene.

Nineteen-year-old Taylor Nix, of Murchison, who was traveling with Smith, was taken to East Texas Medical Center in Athens. She later died as a result of her injuries.
