Mississippi native and former NFL quarterback Brett Favre is the latest high-profile former player to come forward about the lingering effects he's suffering of concussions. After a two decade career, Favre is questioning the price his mind is now paying.

"I think after 20 years, god only knows the toll," Favre said on a sportstalk radio program.

On Thursday, Favre opened up to a sports radio talk show about the lasting impact 'bell-ringing' hits have taken on his memory.

"This was a little shocking to me that I couldn't remember my daughter playing youth soccer," said Favre.

Favre blames his memory loss on an unknown number of concussions over his long career.

"Those first 10 years, they didn't keep a log like they do now, so there's no telling," Favre added.

"When you're putting the brain in trauma we're gonna see these injuries," said Dr. Richard Figler of the Cleveland Clinic Sports Health Center.

Concussion experts hope Favre's honesty about his lingering symptoms will shine a light on the importance of concussion awareness.

"It raises the awareness. It raises kids saying, you know what? I don't feel right, what exactly is going on," said Dr. Figler.

"The players, either retired or some of the few players who are either killing themselves or self-destructing, and ya know, studies have proven that some of this is because of concussions," added Dr. Figler.

Former NFL stars now dealing with the lasting impact of a playing a game they loved. Favre's comments follow the NFL's recent $765 million dollar settlement of a concussion lawsuit brought by more than 45-hundred former players against the league.
