TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Tyler police and Child Protective Services are investigating why twin 3-month-old boys from Tyler ended up at Children's Hospital in Dallas with broken bones.

According to Don Martin with the Tyler Police Department, police were notified on Wednesday morning by the hospital about suspected child abuse when the twins were brought to the hospital with fractured ribs.

"Most three-month-old children aren't that active yet," said Martin. "They're pretty much held all the time, or laying down, so you look at whatever type of injury they sustained."

Shari Pulliam, who works for CPS, says her agency is also investigating the twins, who were first taken to their pediatrician in Tyler. The doctor suggested they see a specialist in Dallas, so the mother took the babies to Children's at which point doctors alerted CPS

The twins were released from the hospital on Tuesday night to relatives. A 1-year-old child who lived in the same home as the twins is currently with those same relatives. The one-year-old was checked out thoroughly by a doctor and was found to be in good condition.

The mother is currently not allowed to see her children unsupervised. She is separated from her husband.

The investigation is ongoing.
