Cars continue flying past stop sign and into E. Texas yard

Posted: Updated:
WHITEHOUSE, TX (KLTV) -

Within the past year, two cars have missed the stop sign in front of an East Texas woman’s house and landed in her front yard. Her home is located at the intersection of County Road 2195 and County Road 2194, just outside of Whitehouse.

A broken headlight laying in the front yard isn’t quite the housewarming gift Ronda Mothershed was hoping for when she moved in four years ago.

“They just ran the stop sign, in and out of the yard, and kept on going. You can see the skid marks down the road where they kept skidding out,” said Mothershed.

A ditch in her front lawn barely catches the cars before they go barreling into her bedroom.

“Somebody’s going to get hurt or killed, and I’ve been trying to get help out here for a couple of years,” she said.

She has spoken with Smith County Sheriff’s Department and the County Commissioner to try to fix the problem. They’ve discussed putting in a three way stop sign at this intersection, or upping police presence to encourage drivers to slow down and actually stop.

The stop sign at the intersection is severely bent, making it difficult to see, especially at night. Ronda is just thankful the damage hasn’t been worse.

"Somebody’s going to get killed, and I don’t want that, and I don’t want to get a car in my bedroom,” she said.

Multiple calls to The County Commissioner have not been returned, but Ronda tells us a Lieutenant with The Smith County Sheriff’s office has been in touch with her and is looking in to a possible solution.
