Possible Eruption At Mount St. Helens

A steam eruption has begun at the Mount St. Helens volcano in Washington State.  Plumes of smoke and ash are also being released.

Every 20 seconds or so before the volcano began erupting steam, Mount St. Helens rumbled with small and moderate earthquakes.

Scientists began warning that an eruption was on the way more than a week after a flurry of earthquakes began at the volcano.  Scientists say they aren't expecting the eruption to be as powerful as the 1980 eruption that blew the top off the mountain and killed 57 people.
