Fighting In Samarra

It's being described as the largest military operation in several months as U.S and Iraqi forces have launched a major offensive against insurgents in the Iraqi city of Samarra..  The offensive was launched in an effort to re-capture the city as a stronghold and get rid the city of insurgents .

There has been heavy gunfire today as ground troops scour the Iraqi city to clear out buildings and mosques.   A U.S. Army spokesman says one American soldier has been killed and four others wounded in the fighting.

At least 96 insurgents have been killed and hospital officials in Samarra say 100 Iraqis have also been wounded. The U.S. military is also reporting a Turkish hostage has been freed in the assault.
