Freedom Fighters: Jim Wilkins

Posted: Updated:
CAMP COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
When Submariner Jim Wilkins was sent to battle in Vietnam in 1968 because of a clerical error, he didn't think he'd make it back to the ocean.

But after escaping death in Vietnam, Wilkins' papers were corrected and he was at last assigned to the submarine service.

The highlight of his submarine service was the four years he spent aboard the oceanographic deep submergence vehicle the Trieste II.

Wilkins was only one of eleven Navy Submariners to be chosen to join the crew.  Aboard the Trieste, Wilkins saw terrain at  the bottom of the ocean never before seen by man.
