Vietnam Traveling Wall receives special escort in East Texas

Posted: Updated:

The Traveling Vietnam Wall has been displayed all over the country, and once again, it has made it's way into East Texas.

Streets stood still Thursday night, as police and more than 50 drivers escorted the wall.

Many of those drivers were veterans and said it was an experience that sent chills down their spines.

"It's moving. It's nice to see people respond to something like this. It means a lot, and it tugs at the heart strings a little bit," said Jim Wolf, a Vietnam veteran.

It's a complete turn around from the response he said he felt when he first returned home from war.

"I walked through LAX Airport and got spit on when I got home. That was not good," said Wolf. "This is special. Something like this is special. It means a lot."

Johnny Dodson entered the military during the Vietnam War and served 20 years after that.

"It gives me chills. I've lost some friends in Vietnam, so this means a lot to me," said Dodson.

He is one of the many riding, and encourages others to pay tribute.

"It's about honoring, and respecting our service members that didn't make it," said Dodson. "I think that if people saw this wall and touched it, they could feel what I feel. You just get a chill through you because you know that's a name that didn't make it back."

Specific names, that these veterans are thinking about while riding.

"I got a good friend down in Robinson that was injured so I'm doing it for him too," said Wolf.

"I'm riding for Gary Harper. We went to school together," said Dodson.

As the wall made it's way into KE Bushman in Bullard.

Veterans started to put the wall together for all that gave some, and the some that gave all.

The wall will be on display at KE Bushman winery in Bullard and visitors are welcome at any time until Sunday at 4 o'clock.

The wall will travel to Tennessee next.
