Clay alums provide field turf across the country

(Toledo News Now) -

Once they were just two guys, down on their luck, trying to come up with a way to make more money.

"I said, ‘We can't keep on this path,'" explained PJ Kapfhammer, co-founder of the Maumee Bay Turf Center. "We met in a garage. Twenty minutes later we devised a plan on how to expand our services and this place was born.

From the ashes of a snow plow business rose the Maumee Bay Turf Center. Founded in 2006 by two Clay High School alumni, the company has taken off.  It now employs 40 people and provides sports fields across the country.

"If you do good work, then people call you," said co-founder Brad Morrison.

In the old days, grass was used at most - if not all - high school stadiums. Now though, more and more schools are switching to turf, and more of them are using the Maumee Bay Turf Center.

"Perrysburg, Lake, Ottawa Hills, Bellevue, Sandusky," said Morrison. "We're not the low end. We sell Cadillacs, basically."

The turf they use is actually made in a factory in Georgia. It costs roughly $700,000 to install, which may sound like a pretty penny, but there's a long-term upside, both on maintenance costs and safety.

"When you take the overall return on investment on the 8-10 year life of the turf, you save money," said Morrison.

As the business has grown, so has the company's reputation. The company has done work for the Bengals and the NFL.

"I think the ultimate goal is to keep on the path we are on and never forget where we came from," said Kapfhammer.

They went from two guys with a dream to two guys living the dream.
