KILGORE, TX (KLTV) -

Gregg County Republican Party Chair Dr. Keith Rothra said that former State Representative Tommy Merritt contacted him today to say he will be announcing a run for agriculture commissioner.

Merritt is seeking the seat currently held by East Texas native Todd Staples, who is campaigning for lieutenant governor.

The 65-year-old from Kilgore served as representative for district 7 from 1997-2011. That seat is currently held by Representative David Simpson of Longview.

Current Republican candidates for agricultural commissioner include former State Representative Tommy Merritt, former State Representative Sid Miller, Austin attorney Eric Opiela and Uvalde mayor Allen Carnes. Former gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman is the lone Democratic candidate for the office.
