GILBERT, AZ (CBS5) -

A woman has been sentenced for giving her 9-year-old granddaughter cocaine as part of a plot to have her son-in-law arrested and allow her full custody of her granddaughter, authorities said.

As part of a plea agreement, Judge Bruce Cohen sentenced Sanjuanita Carabajal, 59, on Friday morning to 12 months in jail and five years of supervised probation, according to court spokeswoman Kelly Vail.

Carabajal was arrested on Oct. 16, 2013 by Gilbert Police School Resource Officers at Pioneer Elementary School in Gilbert for child abuse after the girl came to school with a narcotic.

A field test on the substance by the resource officer returned a positive test for cocaine, according to the police report.

An investigation by the officer and Gilbert detectives led them to believe Carabajal, who had limited custody of the girl, gave several small packets of the drug to the girl with instructions from her grandmother on where to put them in her father's vehicle, and then who to tell at the school about the drugs.

Carabajal was arrested in Phoenix and was booked into Maricopa County Jail on charges of child abuse for placing the minor in danger by providing her the narcotics, according to the report.
