Sign of Change: Toledo man wants to see you smile

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Have you exercised your cheek muscles today? A Toledo man is on a mission to make others smile, one sign at a time.

It's not uncommon to see people holding signs at intersections asking for help, but drivers at the Airport and Holland-Sylvania intersection often see 21-year-old Tony Norton. Norton isn't asking for money, just smiles.

"I started a social experiment about a year ago, holding up cardboard signs that said, ‘Don't need money, just saying hi and God bless,' and it's kind of grown from there," Norton said.

His experiment, #SignOfChange, is proving to be a successful movement.

"[I get] a lot of smiles. People wave, honk," he said. "I hear honks about 1,000 times a day, probably."

He also gets asked ‘why?' frequently.

"Our answer is simple enough: Just to see people smile, and it's for people like you, to make your day," he said.

Norton says he does see some doubters, and people who refuse to look at him.

"But that's what you get," he said. "You're going to have some good and you're going to have some bad. I'm just trying to make a difference."

And he's trying to make the most out of the smiles he does get.

"That's the greatest gift of all. If we can affect just on person's day, one person's life a day, that's the goal," Norton said. "People just need a sign of change, I guess."
