TRAFFIC ALERT: Train derailment closes U.S. 79 southwest of Palestine
JEWETT, TX (KLTV) -
According to KBTX, a train derailment near Jewett has closed Highway 79 until later Wednesday evening.
Officials with the Leon County Sheriff's Office report that six rail cars jumped the railroad tracks that run alongside Highway 79 near Nucor Steel Plant around 12:30 p.m. The Texas Department of Transportation has closed the highway just south of Jewett for around the next eight hours.
No injuries have been reported at this time.
TxDOT is currently establishing a detour around the train derailment. The detour will be to Farm to Market 39, FM 3501, and FM 1512.
Jewett is located about 40 miles southwest of Palestine. Anyone traveling from East Texas to that area via Highway 79 is encouraged to seek an alternate route.
