7 from 7: Stories for your (rainy) Tuesday afternoon

Posted: Updated:

Good afternoon! We hope you're enjoying this gray autumn day in East Texas.

Here are some stories of interest for you to peruse this afternoon:

1. First, let's get to what is dominating many of our minds today: the weather. A flash flood watch is in effect across much of East Texas, and rain will continue through tomorrow in many areas. Read all the details about just how much rain we might expect, and how the temperatures will change, here. (Make sure to join Chief Meteorologist Mark Scirto live today at 4, 5 and 6 for the absolute latest, most up-to-date forecast this afternoon.)

2. A pair wanted for burglarizing coin-operated machines around East Texas has now been arrested, thanks in part to our broadcast on Monday. On Monday night, 35-year-old Michael Robert Ward was arrested after his neighbor, a Van Zandt County Deputy Constable, recognized him on a KLTV broadcast.

3. A marine science instructor snorkeling off the Southern California coast spotted something out of a fantasy novel: the silvery carcass of an 18-foot-long, serpent-like oarfish. Jasmine Santana of the Catalina Island Marine Institute needed more than 15 helpers to drag the giant sea creature with eyes the size of half dollars to shore on Sunday. Picture and more details here.

4. Moving forward with its initiative to collect millions of dollars in unpaid tolls, TxDOT today reminds habitual toll violators that they have until noon on Wednesday to avoid having their names shared with the news media and published on TxDOT and TxTag websites beginning on Thursday.

5. Elvis is in the news today!  Well, at least in the post we pull together for you daily, called "What happened today in Texas history?"  Check it out here.  It's a fun way to learn more about this amazing state we call home!

6. Country singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves, as you probably know, is an East Texas native, hailing from Wood County. She's got a gig on the upcoming CMA Awards on November 9 which you'll be able to watch here on KLTV, and later in September she'll be filming a concert in Texas; you might just want to try to get there. Check out the specifics here.

7. A T-shirt raising awareness for breast cancer got a student suspended from his high school. A junior at an Oklahoma high school got sent home by administrators Friday for his shirt, which read "Twin Peaks" on the front and "save the scenic views" on the back. Roy Smith, the school's principal, said the shirt was offensive. What do you think? See it for yourself here.
