Suspect in deadly fight at Phoenix apartment complex turns self in

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A suspect sought in a deadly fight at a Phoenix apartment complex Sunday morning turned himself in to police early Monday afternoon.

Daniel Cook, 38, self-surrendered at 1 p.m.

Police on Monday also identified the young man killed.

Phoenix Police Department spokesman Officer James Holmes said Richard Allen Bankston, 22, died from his injuries.

Cook had fled the area before police arrived.

Officers found Bankston with an injury to his upper body in the common swimming pool area of Nueva Vista Apartments at 9423 N. 17th Ave. Bankston was rushed to a hospital, where he later died.

Holmes said witnesses told police the suspect, a resident of the complex, and the victim had been involved in a fight and both fell into the swimming pool.

Both men emerged from the pool and continued to fight, according to witnesses. Cook was seen striking the victim with an object and then leaving, Holmes quoted witnesses as saying.

People with any information about the incident are asked to call the Phoenix Police Violent Crimes Bureau at 602-262-6141 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
