PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

A Phoenix police officer is on paid administrative leave after shooting a man who she believed had a gun.

The 21-year-old man was taken to the hospital and scheduled for surgery Sunday.

The 27-year-old officer fired one round at the man, striking him in the leg late Saturday night, said Phoenix police Officer James Holmes. Holmes said the man had been fumbling with something at his waist and turned quickly toward the officer in a threatening manner.

The officer and her partner had been investigating a complaint about a loud party in the area of N. 55th Avenue and W. Flower Street at around 11:30 p.m. when they heard a gunshot at a Marivue Park.

Officers said they saw three men running toward them from the park. The men pointed to another man in the park whom they said had a gun and whom they believed was shooting at them, Holmes said.  The officer began running after the suspect with her partner a short distance behind her.

Holmes said the officer stood about 10 to 15 yards away from the man who ignored commands to stop.

The officers later found a handgun a trash receptacle near the suspect

The suspect faces a charge of aggravated assault.

The officer who wounded the man has been on the police force for seven years.
