Police search for cause of mysterious incident on Interstate 95

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Virginia State Police are still trying to figure out exactly what injured a man and woman, who were found inside their pickup truck on the side of Interstate 95 South near the Chippenham Interchange.

This crash Thursday night has had investigators from three jurisdictions trying to solve what seems like a mystery. As troopers responded to the vehicle, they came up with more questions than answers.

The cause of a wreck or injuries on the interstate is one of the first things State Police look for as they investigate - and almost 24 hours later, it is still unknown.

Police say some sort of projectile struck the driver's side window, which then shattered. The 56-year-old Pennsylvania man, who was driving, was seriously injured. The debris from the glass and possibly the projectile also injured his 56-year-old wife in the passenger seat.

But, what the object that set off this chain of events is remains a mystery.

State troopers are getting help from Chesterfield County as well as Richmond City Police. Much of the investigation is taking place on the roadway, but some of it has been transferred to VCU Medical Center, where doctors examine the wounds to figure out exactly what injured these people.

Right now, VSP detectives are waiting to interview the husband and wife, but of course that is complicated by the medical situation.

State Police say the driver's injuries are serious, but he is expected to survive. His wife's injuries are minor.

One thing investigators are being very clear about--at this point, there is no evidence to suggest these people were shot.

Now, the Criminal Investigation Bureau is processing the pickup truck and collecting any evidence that may give them clues as to what hit it.

AAA Mid-Atlantic says every year debris in the road causes 25,000 accidents and about 100 deaths across the country.

"If this turns out to be some type of debris that's in the roadway or blown tire it's very sad and it's sad especially because some things can't be prevented," spokesperson Martha Meade added.

Virginia State Police are asking anyone who was on I-95 near Chippenham around 11:30 Thursday night to call them at 553-3408.
