TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Tyler police arrested 52-year-old Gerald Lee McMorris on Thursday. McMorris is accused of attempting to steal a purse from a woman at a Tyler Walmart on Tuesday night.

Police say McMorris left Walmart on Highway 64 Tuesday night and followed a 60-year-old woman to her car in the parking lot, where he then attempted to steal her purse.

"His attack was basically an attempt to grab her purse from her arms, and take off," said Don Martin, Public Information Officer with Tyler Police. "However, the way she had it through her arm, she basically wasn't giving it up."

Police say the victim refused to let go of her purse, even after he threw her to the ground.

"She started screaming, and he basically threw her to the ground. He was still trying to get her purse from her," said Martin.

Police say it was the victim's screams that brought attention

"Another female came to her aid after hearing her scream, and there was so much attention being created toward their area. That's when he realized that she wasn't going to give up her purse so he took off running," said Martin.

Police say McMorris surrendered to police around 12:30 on Thursday afternoon when multiple tips were phoned in after people recognized the man from video shown on local media outlets. He is being held on a $750,000 bond for robbery, a second degree felony.

McMorris has a criminal history in Henderson County.
