ETX business asks customers to leave guns at home

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Another East Texas business has put up a sign alerting customers that guns are not allowed.

"We put them up just this week," said Kimberly Lewis, Executive Director of Goodwill Industries of East Texas.

She said the signs were put up in all of their stores across East Texas.

"We recognize that we need to make our facilities safe and comfortable for all of our shoppers and our donors," Lewis said.

"[They are ]not meant to offend anyone of any kind, and the signs are rather large. They are by law the legal binding verbiage and size of that type of sign, and we also wanted to have a bilingual sign," Lewis said.

Several businesses, Goodwill included, have had small signs posted that are simply a picture of a gun with a line striking it. Lewis said those signs are not enough.

She said although Goodwill has not had an incident that led them to post these new signs, she said they are taking a preventative measure and would not be surprised if other businesses in this area followed their lead.

"I do expect to see more companies because it is the legally binding verbiage that is permissible. The other signs, you can put them up, but it's my understanding they really are not legally binding, they are just informational," she explained.

However, some East Texans said these new signs are violating their second amendment rights, but Lewis said they have rights too.

"Our stores have to be comfortable places for our shoppers, our donors and our staff. We certainly don't want to infringe on anyone else's right, but we certainly do have the right to permit certain things and not permit certain things on our property."
