High school students suspended for porn on phones

GRAND BLANC, MI (WNEM) -

A few students from an area high school have been suspended after administrators discovered "pornographic material" on their phones.

Grand Blanc Schools Superintendent Norm Abdella said the students involved were suspended and their parents notified.

Grand Blanc High School principal Jennifer Hammond said four students were suspended last Thursday for a total of 10 class days. Those suspended include both boys and girls.

The material came to light after a student complained to the administration. TV5 asked Hammond about the nature of the pornography, whether they were a combination of images of the students themselves or other pornographic images sent to and from each other. Hammond said, "A combination of all of the above."

Grand Blanc High School student Kayla Grundy said Wednesday night she's concerned with the number of people who take inappropriate photos with their phones.

"It's like really, I mean, I feel like it's common at my school, so when they do it, they don't really think of anything bad because a lot of people do it," said Grundy.

She said she is surprised some take part in sexting, considering the technology available.

"You never know where it's going to end up," said Grundy.

High school parent Trisha Douros said she thinks parents need to intervene to make sure their child isn't making a mistake.

"The parents should know what's going on. Like I said, my daughter doesn't have a cellphone, but when she did have one, I didn't hesitate to go through it," said Douros.

In a prepared statement from Grand Blanc School officials, they said this: "As administrators, we encourage parents to regularly check and monitor their student's phone and talk about appropriate use of all electronics."

School policy calls for the 10-day suspension for students who are caught with pornography on their phones.
