East Texas cities to participate in 'Texans Against Crime' Tuesday
TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
Law enforcement agencies across East Texas are encouraging their communities to gather together Tuesday in an effort to stamp out crime.
Texans Against Crime is East Texas's answer to National Night Out, which happens nationwide each August. But law enforcement agencies moved the day to the second Tuesday in October a few years ago thanks to the weather, and it's become an annual time to get neighbors together to know each other better, typically for block parties.
"It seems like every year it just keeps growing and growing," said Don Martin, the Public Information Officer for the Tyler Police Department. "And so, we look forward to them. We look forward to meeting the neighbors and the people throughout the city. They give us great information, and not only that, it's a bonding time between the first responders and the community."
Texans Against Crime is a day-long event, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., but most neighbors gather in the evening after work. Still, parties take place at different times throughout the day and evening.
There are a record 113 parties registered in Tyler, but there are block parties are happening in Longview, Lufkin, Nacogdoches and many other East Texas cities, with the goal of getting to know your neighbors and the people who protect your communities.
"They get to know each other, more importantly than anything," Martin said. "Then they can say, you know, we're here and we're here to unite and we're here to say, we're not going to allow thugs to come into our neighborhood and take it over by either a shooting or selling drugs or whatever it may be."
It's all in an effort to keep violent crime out of neighborhoods.
"They're sending a message that we're the good neighbors of the neighborhood, and we're going to stand up for what's right, and we're going to push that away," Martin said. "And by doing that, they let us know what's going on in their neighborhood. We have that bond again. They're not afraid to call us and they're standing up to the bad guys."
The Tyler Police Department says the easiest way to find out if your neighborhood is having a party is to contact their department or your neighborhood watch captain.
