TUCSON, AZ (CBS5) -

A family dog alerted a Tucson couple to an early-morning fire in their garage that eventually spread to the attic of their home.

The couple credits their pooch, Reilly, of enabling them to escape to safety.

Multiple vehicles were engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene around 1:30 a.m. Monday in the 10500 block of East Dusky Willow Drive.

Firefighters took hose lines through the front door of the house to fight the fire from the unburned side, a tactic used to reduce damage by preventing flames from spreading to the rest of the home, said Tucson fire Capt. Barrett Baker.

A second crew arrived soon after and began attacking the blaze that was burning three vehicles - two in the garage and one in the driveway, Baker said.

When the fire spread into the attic of the house, a ladder crew cut two holes in the roof to allow the smoke to escape. They were able to put out the fire in the attic space by spraying water in the holes that they had cut, while crews inside pulled down the ceiling.

Eight units and 21 firefighters worked to control the fire.

No one was injured.

The couple, along with Reilly, stayed in another location and didn't need help from the Red Cross.

Three cars were destroyed and the garage and other areas of the house had considerable smoke and fire damage, Baker said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
