Laura Bush to visit Tyler Friday to launch new children's book

Posted: Updated:
TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The Junior League of Tyler is unveiling a new children's book Friday, and they've invited a special guest to read it aloud for the first time.

Former First Lady Laura Bush will be reading "Goodnight Rose City" to a group of students to launch the Junior League of Tyler's new book.

Junior League members say they wanted to have a special book launch, so they asked Mrs. Bush to be the first reader of the book because of her dedication to literacy across the state and country.

"We chose her because as we were looking for someone who has a passion for literacy, Mrs. Bush does," said Junior League of Tyler President Shannon Glenney. "She founded the Texas Book Festival, the National Book Festival, she was a librarian. She honestly is a perfect fit, and we were thrilled and we cannot wait to have her be our first reader."

"Goodnight Rose City" was written by Junior League of Tyler members and illustrated by local artist Lindsay Boone to highlight different parts of the city, like a local football game, musicians at the Cowan Center, the Rose Garden and the Rose Queen at the parade.

"It's a good night to the Rose City, and the reader is going to go through the fun places that a family can go and loves to go -- the Caldwell Zoo, the Discovery Science Place, the Tyler Museum of Art, places that just highlight Tyler," said Glenney.

Bush will read the book to a group of local guest students chosen for the event.

"She's going to speak on volunteerism, and then the guest students are going to sit down, and it will look like a library on the stage, and she will officially read the book out loud," Glenney said.

Junior League members say they came up with the idea from other cities' "Goodnight" books, but that this is the only book where all the proceeds go straight back into the community through Junior League volunteer projects.

The event starts at 11 a.m. at the CrossWalk Center at Green Acres Baptist Church. Tickets were pre-sold and will not be available at the door.

However, the book will be available for purchase at the Junior League of Tyler office and at many locations mentioned in the book in the next couple of weeks.
