TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Tyler Independent School District is preparing to train a whole new workforce for East Texas. On Thursday, they broke ground for a new career and technology education center, in Tyler near Bennett Avenue and Earl Campbell Parkway.

It’s a common question, what do you want to be when you grow up?

“I don’t know if you all remember that Easy Bake Oven? That’s what actually made me want to do this,” Alondra Anaya said.

She wants to open a bakery.

For these culinary students, from John Tyler and Robert E. Lee High Schools, what they want to be is actually what they are training to become.

“I want to become a famous chef, maybe,” Clarissa Aguilar said.

The new building will be catering to many new student’s career goals.

“We can have students that are well on their way to a certification program and working that way when they come out of high school, so they can get that high paying job and we can keep them right here in East Texas,” Gary Mooring, TISD Superintendent, said.

Doors to the new building will open in 2015 and it will house 16 programs: health sciences, criminal justice, and media, just to name a few. It will unite Robert E. Lee and John Tyler High School students all under the same roof.

“A lot of trades that are highly skilled positions, we don’t have enough people in East Texas to fill them,” Mooring said.

Jobs are being created across East Texas and to fill those newly opened spots, a new wave of workers is coming through.

“I really enjoy it, since it’s like one of the things I want to do when I grow up,” Anaya said.

Fostering an environment to grow skills for kids to be just what they want, when they grow up.
