KKK recruitment leaflets found on East Texas doorsteps

MARSHALL, TX (KSLA) -

It appears that the Ku Klux Klan is recruiting in East Texas. One Marshall, Texas man says he was shocked to find a KKK recruitment leaflet on his doorstep. "Our particular neighborhood does not need type of thing because we are surrounded by neighbors that we get along fine. We are Hispanic, we are black, we are white, we are everything, but most of all we are Americans and we'd just like it to stay that way," says Dick Sawyer.

The leaflet, apparently from the Ku Klux Klan, landed in at least 10 other yards on Woodland Street. "When I stepped out my kitchen door, there on my doorstep was my paper and a package," Sawyer recalls. "When I opened the package, there was a leaflet in there and a small mint and a marble."

News of recent KKK recruitment rallies has been popping up across the country. The leaflet Sawyer found on his doorstep had a phone number on it, so we called to get a statement. We got an automated voice message: "Greeting white brothers and sisters. You have reached the loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. Always remember if it ain't white, it ain't right. White power."

The Harrison County NAACP says the KKK has been in the county, but not necessarily in Marshall, for years. "As far as the KKK is concerned, we can't afford it in a town like Marshall, all we can do is in the public schools, try to educate our children to know that everybody counts and that education leads you to higher levels," says Marshall NAACP branch president Charles W. Wilson.

"I was upset about it, no question about it. That someone would dump something like that in my yard, especially at the fact that all these people around here are my friends," says Sawyer.

Police say there was no report file on this, so there is no investigation.
