EAST TEXAS (KLTV) -

The Merchant, a western thriller shot and produced right here in East Texas, is now making its way across the country.

"I think what was really cool was that they used East Texas actors and talent and everybody involved was from East Texas," said David K. Shelton, an actor in the movie.

Shelton said he was born and raised in East Texas and was elated to take on the role of "Samuel Reuben," a young farm hand, in this Texas horror film.

"I grew up in Pittsburg, we shot in Gilmer, so it was right up the road," Shelton said.

"From top to bottom, it's an East Texas film. In Gilmer, perfect full-size, fully functional old west town. Great set location," said Mike Hall, who plays "Levi," whom he describes as a bully in The Merchant.

"It's titled as a horror film. I've come to think of it as more of a suspense/thriller with horror elements thrown in because you don't know what's coming around the next turn," Hall explained.

It is an East Texas movie they hope will take off across the nation

"We actually just got back from the NOLA Timecode festival in New Orleans; it was an official selection there," Shelton said.

"We are in the process of working with distributors and finding distribution for the film so it can be shown in houses and  be bought in stores across the U.S.," Shelton explained.

These cast members said East Texas is on the right path to catch the eye of more filmmakers who they hope will see what this part of the country and Texas has to offer.

"You can pretty much find whatever you need for whatever genre of film you're filming right here," Hall said.
