Meals on Wheels Ministry celebrates 40 years of service

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Meals on Wheels celebrated 40 years of serving East Texans in need.

They celebrated Tuesday with a fundraising event and banquet at the Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler.

Organizers say the banquet raises critical funds that go directly to paying for hot, home-delivered meals for more than 3,200 East Texans in six different counties.

Many say the ministry does more than just deliver food.

"It gives them a good, hot meal, that's a good meal every day," said Aubrey Sharp, President of the Board for Meals on Wheels. "It is one thing that keeps them out of nursing homes, which is a lot more inexpensive. They can stay home, and somebody checks on them every day to make sure they're okay. Even their cats and dogs are checked on too."

The Ginger Murchison Foundation announced that they would match up to $40,000 in donations to the Meals on Wheels Ministry in East Texas.

The event also honored their 2013 Volunteer of the Year, Evelyn Ford of Tool, Texas. Mrs. Ford has been a faithful volunteer in the organization for years, and still gets out on a delivery route when needed, several times a week, among many other duties.
