Driver killed in Sylvania Township accident

SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says a driver was killed Tuesday afternoon when another driver hit his vehicle, pushing it into the path of an oncoming semi truck.

The accident happened just after 1 p.m. at the intersection of Central Avenue and Herr Road in Sylvania Township. Police say 58-year-old Gary A. Ford of Berkey, OH was traveling eastbound Central Avenue and stopped to turn left onto Herr Road.

As Ford stopped, the patrol says a car driven by 19-year-old Austin Smith of Ottawa Lake Michigan hit the back of his vehicle, forcing it into oncoming traffic. Ford's car was hit by an oncoming semi truck and rolled off the north side of the roadway.

Ford was transported to a local hospital but later pronounced dead.  No one  else was hurt in the crash.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the accident.
