East Texas road almost back open after wash out

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

An East Texas road that was washed out September 20 during heavy rain fall is being repaired ahead of schedule.

Two large culverts just could not handle Prairie Creek runoff on County Road 474 in Lindale, and a woman was nearly washed away trying to cross high water. We spoke with someone who lives nearby who says the road has more problems than a washed out culvert.

Mae Reid was there when a woman was pulled from an SUV trapped in Prairie Creek. She's glad to see work on the road repair is progressing.

"They're putting in bigger, longer culverts this time, so hopefully more water can flow through at a faster pace," said Reid.

Water rose into several storage buildings in her backyard and a lot of her things were damaged, but luckily, water did not get into her house.

"Tools, equipment and stuff that I used to do crafts with and all of that, sewing and stuff like that," Reid explained.

She does have another concern about the road, saying that her son has helped pull many drivers out of the water nearby.

"There's been problems throughout the years, especially when it rains. Just a little on the road, and it gets slick. The road's not wide enough, so if somebody tries to get over they go in the ditch," Mae recalled.

Smith County Precinct 3 Commissioner Terry Phillips says they are ahead of schedule.

"We got the culverts in sooner than expected, they came in early Thursday morning, and as soon as we received them we got out there and started digging the old culverts out. This morning we placed the new ones in there," said Phillips.

He says the county has no plans to widen the road because the road has to be built up. As a result, costs would be too high.

If all goes as planned the road will be open by the end of the week, and the bigger culverts should keep the road from washing out. By using crushed asphalt instead of East Texas clay, the road will open more quickly.
