HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Doctors at Huntsville Pediatric Associates said a seasonal bacteria that hits during the end of summer and fall has made its appearance in the Tennessee Valley.

It's called Mycoplasma. It causes walking pneumonia.

Since its peak season began, each doctor reports typically seeing about 4 or 5 cases a day.

Dr. Kevin Ellis says symptoms for the Mycoplasma bacteria are usually tell-tale signs.

"About two to two and a half weeks of coughs, a runny nose, sore throat, some low grade fever running about 100 to 102," said Ellis.

The illness is contagious, so it can be easily spread through a cough or sneeze. The best way to prevent it is also the simplest: wash your hands.

Treatment involves a prescription of 5 to 14 days of antibiotics.
