KILGORE, TX (KLTV) - Four East Texas police officers were honored for actions taken during a standoff in Gregg County.

The Kilgore Police Department awarded the lifesaving medal to four officers during a ceremony Tuesday evening. Chief Todd Hunter pinned the medals on Lieutenant Tony Stone, Sergeant Vance Callahan, Detective Tim Dukes and Detective Kay Lynn Newbill. The medals were awarded in relation to an incident that occurred May 2.

The officers responded to a welfare concern located at the 500 block of Gladewater Avenue. Upon arrival, they encountered a man and his father inside a pick-up. A strong smell of propane gas was noted at the scene. Officers initiated contact with 50-year-old William Lawson, who threatened to ignite the propane, killing himself, his father and surrounding authorities.

With the assistance of the Kilgore Fire Department, the officers were able to breach the truck and remove its occupants. Lawson was taken into custody by police. His father was treated at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview.
