Nacogdoches' Durst Taylor House opens new exhibit

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

There are many museums to visit in Nacogdoches, including the Durst Taylor Historic House. The museum has officially re-opened after installing a new permanent exhibit that brings in multiple interactive features.

QR codes, informational flip books for children and artifacts are just some of the new things on exhibit at the 2nd oldest building in Nacogdoches.

"We had wonderful researchers and exhibit team that found out things about this property that I didn't know," said Durst-Taylor Museum Director Jessica Sowell.

The museum wanted to make the exhibits more interactive and showcase other places in towns.

"You scan these codes and it takes you to websites that have something to do with the overall medallion," Sowell said. "We're trying to bring it to the 21st century. A lot of people think museums are hands off and everything stays the same and nothing gets updated. That's absolutely not true. We are trying to show that there are things you can touch. There are things you can use your smart phones in a museum for."

The exhibit focuses on the house and the way Nacogdoches has fit in the overall history of the country.

"We also have a timeline that runs across the top of the exhibit that talks about American history like the civil war and man landing on the moon and different events that show where Nacogdoches was here while everything else was happening."

The new exhibit does more than benefit the Durst house.

"We're going to tell them, 'visit the Stone Fort or go to Millard's Crossing," Sowell said. "Go to the old North Church or Old University building. We really try to promote the overall museum atmosphere in Nacogdoches."

It is an exhibit that truly has something for everyone.

The museum is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m.- 4p.m.
