307th Red Horse deployment from Barksdale Air force Base

About 70 airmen of the 307th Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineers (RED HORSE) deployed from Barksdale Air Force Base on Saturday, September 21.

The 307th RED HORSE is heading to Southwest Asia and will station there until sometime in 2014.

This is in addition to the 500 Barksdale airmen already serving out of the country.

But whether it's airmen from Barksdale, or other service men and women from other military branches, it's important to show them support.

The organization "Operation Support Our Troops" (OSOT) has served in Shreveport since 2004 and sends care packages to troops overseas at least five times each year.

The next shipment of care packages ships Saturday, Sept. 28. But donations are still needed to fill these packages.

"Our collection here has been a lot lower than usual," Shirley Olivieri-Mathies with OSOT said. "Typically we'll send 100 plus boxes for each one of our five shipments and this year our numbers just haven't been there."

Donations such as snacks, shampoo and other toiletries can make our troops feel a little closer to home.

"Receiving a care package or a note from home or any idea that folks from home are thinking of you when you're deployed is a huge morale boost on your day," Cpt. Phil Ventura at Barksdale Air Force Base said. "It just really helps you get through the day far away from home."

Donations can be dropped off at any UPS store in Shreveport and Bossier. Also at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in South Shreveport and any American Climate Control Storage facility in the area.

The last day to donate for the Halloween OSOT care package shipment is Friday, Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. The care packages will be shipped on Saturday, Sept. 28.
