Several East Texas families spent the day enjoying food, fun, pirates, and learning about fire safety, all part of a special abilities family fun event in Kilgore. Games, entertainment and a little learning marked the 2nd annual 'SAFFE' day in Kilgore.
"Its a day for anyone with special needs or abilities a day where they're not different but they are the norm," says Kilgore fire chief Johnny Bellows.
Organized by the Kilgore fire department, its promoted as a fun event for any child or adult with special needs.
"We can come out and my son Matthew can feel as special as everybody else and doesn't get looked at, and it just makes him feel welcome here," says Judy Kerr who has a disabled son.
"My fellows are having a great time out here this is our second year to be out here," says Woodbine home worker Perry Daniel's.
Its a little something different for everybody. A learning experience , but also a chance for those with disabilities to be no different from anyone else. From a ride in the fire ladder bucket, to using the jaws of life, there was something for everybody.
"Every time you turn around you see a smiling face," Daniel's says.
And you could see it in the faces of those who were having such a good time.
"You come and here and you have a smile on your face when you leave. Along the way you'll probably have a tear in your eye," Bellows says.
The event was free to the public and was held on Kilgore's "worlds richest acre'.
