The city of Tyler celebrated a historic event Saturday.
They named a street after East Texas sports official and legendary gospel singer, Roy Ray.
Ray's family, neighbors, and Tyler city councilmen gathered to celebrate the street renaming and Roy Ray's life.
The Tyler City Council unanimously decided to rename the street because of Ray's positive influence on the East Texas community.
"He was a people person, but he loved young people. He loved his community, and I think that's why it was so easy for it to be a unanimous decision," said Darryl Boware, Tyler City Councilmen for the West District.
"He would not believe that the city would think that much of him and for the things he did," said Adrian Ray, Roy Ray's only son. "My father knew a lot of people, but he was a humble guy. He would have never thought something like this would happen. He would be blown away."
The event also hosted Councilmen Boware, Adrian and singer Lady Ina Miller, who closed the ceremony by singing gospel.
Ray's family say he past away suddenly last year when he suffered a heart attack.
