Parks popping up in unusual places in Nashville

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Cities around the world, including Nashville, celebrated Friday what is known as PARK(ing) Day. It's a one-day effort to show what cities would look like if they turned parking spots into green space.

Organizers set out to turn metered parking spots into temporary parks for the day, including one location near the corner of Broadway and Fourth Avenue North, where passers-by could take a seat among some bushes and trees - a rare sight on Lower Broad.

Other pop-up parks were located in Green Hills and the Gulch, as leaders with the Nashville Civic Design Center said there's more room for green in this town as well as pedestrian-friendly places.

"I would love for them to look at it and say, 'Oh, that's beautiful. Is that a new park?' Some of these will look like parks and some will just look like fun installations," said Audra Ladde, with the Land Trust for Tennessee. "I really want to have people thinking about what this section of downtown would look like with some more tree cover and some more benches and greenery."

If you're thinking it's already hard enough to find a parking spot downtown, remember this isn't a permanent project. It's just a 24-hour plan to get the word out about adding green spaces in public places.
