LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Former University Medical Center Vice President, Greg Bruce, was sentenced to 51 months in prison and 3 years probation for mail fraud on Friday.

He was also ordered to pay $737, 492 in restitution.

Bruce's lawyer spoke of Bruce's ongoing work and efforts to local non-profits and organizations during time at UMC.

He requested that the judge consider Bruce's cooperation with the investigation.

Bruce voluntarily surrendered and agreed to freeze his retirement account at UMC.

Bruce, 46, pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud in a Lubbock federal court in June 2013.

He was caught embezzling hospital funds in December 2011.

Court documents show that beginning in June 2007, Bruce and Rudolph Reyes Mata submitted fraudulent invoices to two false companies, B.R. Media Monitoring and ATM Technology Solutions.

UMC paid approximately $681, 908 to both companies. When hospital administrators confronted Bruce, he admitted to stealing funds and resigned.

Bruce later admitted that he also used a UMC credit card, spending approximately $55,584 on unauthorized purchases.

Bruce used part of the funds to pay Mata's personal living expenses, educational expenses, and travel and entertainment expenses.

UMC released this statement on Friday:

After a review of hospital expenses in December 2011, UMC caught former Vice President Greg Bruce embezzling hospital funds. Since that time, UMC has cooperated with federal authorities as they investigated this matter.

With today's sentencing, UMC is relieved that this matter can now be put to rest and grateful to the U.S. Attorney's Office, FBI and others who brought this issue to close.

Since Mr. Bruce's resignation, UMC has taken several steps to further protect hospital funds, including how checks are issued, vendors approved and credit cards used.
