Arts panel selects public piece for outside Music City Center

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A new piece of public art is coming to Nashville, and it will sit in the center of the roundabout of Korean Veterans Boulevard, in the shadow of the Music City Center.

For now, the piece has the working title of "Stix," and it is composed of 35 painted red cedar poles, each standing about 85 feet tall, twice the height of a street light.

The poles, designed by internationally-acclaimed artist Christian Moeller, will be illuminated at night.

Moeller's piece was selected over four other finalists Thursday by the Metro Arts Commission, and it is expected to draw excitement and curiosity from the people who see it.

"Just like any place you go and visit, you want to see art that's one of a kind and different. You want something where people will ask questions or compels people. We want that for the city, and we want to be cutting edge," said Arts Commission Executive Director Jennifer Cole.

Moeller, who lives in California, has designed public art projects for cities around the world, including Singapore, London and New York City.

For his contribution to the Nashville art scene, Metro will pay him $750,000.

It's all part of an effort in which city leaders decided to build Nashville's public art collection, and in their words, "enrich the lives of Nashvillians."

"I think that neighborhood is a connecting point to a variety of things, both downtown, and the east side and the Gulch. It's an anchor for a really developing part of the downtown, and that's critical," Cole said.

Cole could not say exactly when the art will be installed. Legal issues over land ownership could mean that it will take several years.
