FBI releases ETX crime rates

Posted: Updated:

This data is collected annually by the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program.

They have divided crimes into two categories: property crimes and violent crimes

Burglary, larceny/theft, motor vehicle theft and arson all fall into the "property crimes" category.

Murder and non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault fall into the "violent crimes" category.

Nationally, the data collected shows there's been an increase in violent crimes since 2011 and a decrease in property crimes.

So, we looked at how a few East Texas cities compare to the national trend.

In 2012, Jacksonville reportedly had 159 violent crimes and 707 property crimes.

So they have decreased in the number of violent crimes, but increased in property crimes since 2011.

The FBI recorded that Longview had 463 violent crimes and 4, 212 property crimes last year.

In 2011 they reportedly had less violent crimes and less property crimes.

The FBI reports that Tyler 536 violent crimes and 4,506 property crimes in 2012.

However, looking back to the previous year, Tyler had fewer violent crimes and less property crimes.

We did reach out to the Tyler Police Department for comment, but they tell us that some of their department's numbers do not match up to those of the FBI's and working to determine why those numbers are different.
