Attempted abduction reported in Whitehouse Friday

WHITEHOUSE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Whitehouse Police say an unknown male approached a 10-year-old girl Friday evening and offered her a ride home.

Police say just before 8:30 p.m. Friday, a man in a blue van with yellow Ohio license plates approached the girl and asked if she wanted to see a puppy, then offered her a ride home.

The incident happened in the 7000 block of Laurel Ridge Drive in Whitehouse, according to police.

The girl says she ignored him and continued riding her bike home, but says the man followed her the whole way.

The girl's father says he taught his children what to do in this type of situation, and he says he's glad he did.

"I've always told all my kids - I have three kids - 'Don't talk to nobody. Come home and get me. Come get your mom, neighbor, somebody. Don't ever talk to them, just run,'" said Anthony Lewis.

The Anthony Wayne School District sent a notification of the incident to parents Monday. The message, sent by the district's superintendent, is below.

Dear AW Parents:

The Anthony Wayne Local Schools were notified today by a parent of a Fallen Timbers Middle School student of a potential abduction of their child on Friday night at approximately 8pm.  The police report indicates the reported abduction happened in the vicinity of Laurel Ridge Drive in Whitehouse while the child was riding a bike.  The vehicle was described as an older blue van with Ohio license plates that were yellow.  The person driving the van was described to be male, white, in his 40's, with short hair and a goat-tee.

The good news is there was no abduction in this situation.  As a parent, I will take time to speak to my children about preventative measures if they are approached in these types of situations.  If you would like resources to help you and your family discuss these preventative measures you can find resources at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at http://www.missingkids.com/Families.

Thank you,

Jim Fritz
Superintendent
Anthony Wayne Local Schools

The description of the suspect is vague, but police say if anyone has information about the incident, they should call the police department at 419-877-5383.
