Tyler-native Johnny Manziel wins Earl Campbell Player of the Week Award

Posted: Updated:

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel was named the Week Three National Player of the Week by SPORTyler on Monday.

The Tyler-native threw for a career-best and school record 464 yards and five touchdowns against the top-ranked Crimson Tide in a 49-42 defeat. Manziel also carried the ball 14 times for 98 yards.

Manziel was an honorable mention for the award last week.

To qualify for the award, which honors Texas legend Earl Campbell, an offensive player must be born in Texas, graduate from a Texas high school and play at a Texas junior college or four-year college. Players must also exhibit the characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, community and tenacity.

Also nominate for this week's award were Treyvon Green, a running back at Northwestern; Kolton Brown, a quarterback at University of Louisiana-Monroe; Kenny Guiton, a quarterback at Ohio State; and Mike Evans, a wide receiver at Texas A&M.
