(RNN) - Thousands gathered in New York City, Washington, DC, and a field in Pennsylvania to remember the victims in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The memorials held a moment of silence early Wednesday morning. The attacks killed almost 3,000 people.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met with the Russian foreign minister in Geneva, Switzerland, to potentially come to a mutual agreement that would allow Syria to give up its chemical weapons and avoid a U.S. military strike. The meeting signifies a "step forward" in the two countries' attempt to achieve a diplomatic solution to the Syrian chemical weapons crisis.

Police said there was no evidence George Zimmerman had a gun during a domestic incident in which he was detained and questioned. Estranged wife Shellie Zimmerman called 911 saying George Zimmerman punched her father and was threatening her and her father with a gun. George Zimmerman was detained but not arrested. Authorities said they are attempting to review video on a damaged iPad that allegedly contains video of the dispute.
