SeveralEast Texans were honored during the state's annual Star of Texas Awards, which honors first responders who have either died or been seriously injured in the line of duty.
Among those receiving the awards were families of fallen Kaufman County DistrictAttorney Mike McLelland, his wife Cynthia and McLelland's chief prosecutor MarkHasse. The McLellands and Hasse were shot and killed during attacks earlier this year. A former justice of the peace and his wife were arrested in connection to that case.
First responders to the West, Texas fertilizer plant explosion were also honored in the awards ceremony.
LongviewPolice Officer Leigh Ann Snyder, Jackson Heights Volunteer Firefighter Jalen S.Smith and Texarkana Police Officer William J. Sprague were all honored with aStar of Texas Award.
Snyder was injured in a December 2011 crash by an intoxicated driver. She was later fired by the Longview Police Department. The suspect plead guilty to the crime and was sentenced to twelve years in prison.
JacksonHeights Volunteer Firefighter Jalen S. Smith was killed following injuries he received in a crash in November 2011. Smith and two other Jackson Heights volunteers were responding to a crash when their crash occurred on Farm toMarket Road 2767 in Smith County
TexarkanaPolice Officer William J. Sprague was killed in a hit and run crash earlier this year.
TheStar of Texas Awards have been given out yearly since their start in 2003.
