The home of a famous Tyler architect has been designated as a historical landmark.
The original home of Shirley Simons now houses Roberts and Roberts law offices. After more than 20 years and thousands of dollars in renovations, the home was honored by the Tyler Historic Preservation Society.
Simons' grandson was excited to see his grandfather's home, which he visited as a child, recognized.
"My grandfather is an architect and has done many works here in Tyler, but to have it part of the family history and home, it's real exciting," says Chris Simons.
"When we purchased this property in 1987, it was overrun with weeds and rats. We had just enough money to put down some tile in some rooms, new carpet in other rooms and paint a few other rooms. But we made a commitment then to set aside the money to fix up one room each year," says Randy Roberts.
Other notable landmarks that Shirley Simons contributed to the City of Tyler include Bergfeld Park, Marvin United Methodist Church, Tyler Junior College and Willow Brook Country Club.
