No action yet on E. Texas coach

Pine Tree Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Derek Fitzhenry was placed on administrative leave last week, after allegations of a physical altercation with a student during Pine Tree's first football game on August 30.

Lots of rumors have swirled around as to what really happened during that East Texas football game, and now it has gone before the board.

It was the last item on the Pine Tree School Board's agenda and it drew quite the crowd.

It was standing room only at Monday evening's meeting with more than 100 people in attendance.

The majority of attendees were football players, students and parents who came with signs in support of their athletic director.

He is one of many who say Coach Fitzhenry has transformed the team for the better.

"He's brought us together as a family and that the allegations that he talks bad to each one of us...I could bring every single one of my football players up and I'm very confident that none of them would have something bad to say about him," said Bryndin Hartman, a senior football player at Pine Tree High School.

However, not everyone agrees.

Debbie Garrett made a public comment in Monday's meeting and introduced herself as a concerned parent and alumni.

"I am also coming tonight to speak on behalf of others who have expressed a reluctance to come or even to be seen because they are concerned that their children will be retaliated against should the board decide to stay with the status quo," Garrett said.

"Your actions, your decisions, are just like a classroom teacher; they teach students what we value, whether it is integrity or whether it is a win/loss column. Your decisions teach students whether all people will be treated equally by this district," she added.

She said if the allegations regarding Coach Fitzhenry are indeed factual, then disciplinary action needs to be taken .

Pine Tree ISD superintendent Dr. T. J. Farler tells KLTV 7 that no action will be taken by the school district's board Monday night. The superintendent said the appropriate action decided by the board will be carried out Tuesday.

No details have been confirmed surrounded what really happened at that football game.
